Project description

As of 2008, the Spoor Noord Park will become Antwerp's second municipal park within the Singel and the Ringroad.
Eighteen hectares of former railway yards will be transformed into an urban landscape park. The design
for the park is by the Italian Studio O6 and the Dutch landscape architect Kromwijk.
The park will contain a network of paths for pedestrians and cyclists, running north-south and connecting the
nearby neighbourhoods Dam, Seefhoek en Stuivenberg. A promenade will run from east to west over the entire
length of the park (1.6 km). This promenade will be the park's central axis or backbone. It will form a pleasant,
safe and rapid connection for non-motorised traffic between the Singel and the Leien.
The prospective cycle and pedestrian bridge will be located in the continuation of this promenade. It will form
the missing link connecting the Spoor Noord Park with the Scheldekaaien via het Eilandje. Linking these cycle
and pedestrian routes will create a clear path for non-motorised traffic through the entire northern breadth of the
city, up to the Scheldekaaien.
The bridge will span the Leien, including the prospective tram traffic. As such, a free span over a width of
approximately 60 metres will be necessary. The location of the new bridge at the Noorderplaats, the northern
end of the Leien, offers it every potential to become a gateway to the city. As such, the bridge must have the
architectural and technical allure fitting to a metropolitan site.
