Project description

In Brussels there is a shortage of places in Dutch-language primary education. To respond to this capacity issue, the Flemish Community's GO! education network and the Brussels school group wants to establish a new primary school in Schaarbeek with support from the Flemish Community Commission. This school, De Muziekladder, should provide 180 places for pupils in the kindergarten and primary school.

The plan is to build the school on the domain of the music school in Lambermontstraat in Schaarbeek.
The GO! owns a large enclosed domain with plots along Lambermontstraat, Jan Blockxstraat and Helmetse Steenweg. The inner area is entirely a park zone. Building is possible along the street sides, within the profiles of the adjacent houses.
The music school is in Lambermontstraat and temporary units have been installed on Helmetse Steenweg so that the new school can already be started up on 1 September.
The largest area for building is in Jan Blockxstraat. This is where the new building should be, but this area is not big enough to accommodate the entire school. So the kindergarten children will be housed on Helmetse Steenweg. Building will have to be in two stages. The first is the primary school. When it is finished the temporary units on Helmetse Steenweg can be removed and a new building for the kindergarten can be put up.
This is a typical urban setting. The building area is limited and the profiles of the adjacent terraced houses will have to be adhered to. So several storeys will be needed.
The programme includes the functions that are indispensable for the operation of a primary school: classrooms, dining room, multipurpose hall, offices, etc.

GO! education aims for sustainable school buildings. Sustainable in every sense: location, mobility, energy, water, building process, materials, safety and comfort. For this purpose, the GO! education system has developed a sustainability meter together with Agion. The design of the building must at every stage be checked against this sustainability meter.
