Project description

The TMVW is an integrated drinking water company involved in the provision of drinking water, decontamination, the production of water for industry and such secondary activities as swimming pool management.

As part of its product infrastructure for drinking water, the TMVW has 28 operational water-towers. The one in Grootbosstraat in Beersel is in such bad condition that the cost of repairs is escalating rapidly. In addition, the capacity of the water container (500 cubic m.) is too limited in relation to average daily use to be able to satisfy today's needs. Therefore, instead of renovating the existing tower, the TMVW wants to build a new water container and demolish the old tower. The higher storage capacity of the new container will also make it possible to eliminate several underground drinking water reservoirs scattered across the borough.

The new water container will be built alongside the existing water-tower. A preliminary plan has been drawn up for a water container rising to 35 m above ground level, with an internal diameter of 12 m and a capacity of about 3,000 cubic m drinking water. It also serves as a mast for mobile phone antennae and a cabin is provided on top in which to set up equipment. Once this new container is in use, the old water-tower will be demolished.

The present tower is on a public amenity site surrounded by an agricultural zone (agrarian land with valuable landscape). The relevant authorities have given preliminary approval to this project on the basis of the first draft plan.
